Best Y Level for Diamonds in Minecraft (1.21 and Older)

The best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft 1.21 and newer, and in 1.8–1.17: where diamonds spawn, the fastest way to mine them, and how to stay safe from lava.

Diamonds make the best tools and armor in the overworld, and they are rare on purpose. Knowing the best Y level for diamonds and mining the right way turns hours of searching into a few minutes. Here is where diamonds spawn in Minecraft 1.18 and later (including 1.21), what changes in older versions like 1.8.9, and how to come back alive.

Check your height first

Your height is the Y coordinate. Press F3 and read the line "XYZ" (the middle number is Y), or show it on screen all the time with a coordinates HUD, like the one in Hexa Client.

Best Y level for diamonds (1.18 and newer)

Since the Caves & Cliffs update, diamonds generate from Y 16 down to Y -64, and they become more common the deeper you go.

  • Best level: Y -58 to Y -59, just above the bedrock at the bottom.
  • Between Y -54 and -64, lava is very common in caves: be ready.
  • Below Y 0 the stone is deepslate, which takes longer to mine. An efficiency pickaxe helps a lot.

Best Y level in older versions (1.8.9 to 1.17)

Before 1.18 the world started at Y 0 and diamonds generated from Y 1 to Y 16. The classic advice was to mine at Y 11 or 12: low enough for diamonds, and just above the lava lakes at Y 10. This still applies if you play 1.8.9, 1.12.2 or 1.16.5.

How to mine for diamonds: branch mining

The most reliable method is branch mining:

  1. Go down to Y -58 with a staircase (never dig straight down).
  2. Dig a main tunnel, 2 blocks tall, as long as you like.
  3. Every 3 blocks along it, dig a side branch to both sides, 2 blocks tall.
  4. Leaving two blocks of stone between branches means you see every ore in between without mining it all.

Tools that help

  • You need at least an iron pickaxe: stone or wood breaks diamond ore and drops nothing.
  • Fortune III gives about 2.2 diamonds per ore on average. Save your diamond ore for a Fortune pickaxe if you have one coming.
  • Silk Touch drops the ore block itself, so you can mine it later with Fortune.
  • Efficiency pickaxes make deepslate much faster, and Night Vision potions let you see ores in dark tunnels.

Other places to find diamonds

You can also find diamonds in chests in shipwrecks, buried treasure, village blacksmiths, desert temples and ancient cities. They are a nice bonus, but branch mining is far more reliable.

What to make first

With your first diamonds, make a diamond pickaxe (3 diamonds) so you can mine obsidian, then build a Nether portal. Later, add a sword and armor. If your game runs slowly in big caves, read how to get more FPS in Minecraft.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Y level for diamonds in 1.21?

Y -58 to -59, near the bottom of the world. Diamonds generate from Y 16 down to Y -64 and get more common the deeper you go.

What Y level are diamonds in 1.8.9?

In 1.8.9 and other versions before 1.18, diamonds generate from Y 1 to 16. Mining at Y 11 or 12 is the classic choice.

Can you mine diamonds with a stone pickaxe?

No. You need an iron pickaxe or better; with a stone pickaxe the ore breaks and drops nothing.

Is it better to explore caves or branch mine?

Branch mining at Y -58 is more reliable: diamonds are less likely to generate next to air, so open caves show fewer of them.
