Minecraft 1.8.9 PvP Guide: Settings, Combos and Tips
Why PvP players still use Minecraft 1.8.9, and how to get better: the best settings, W-tapping, block-hitting, strafing, combos, the rod, CPS and clean mods.

Years after it came out, Minecraft 1.8.9 is still the version of choice for PvP: Hypixel Duels, Bedwars, practice servers and most competitive players use it. This guide explains why, how to set up your game, and the techniques that win fights: W-tapping, block-hitting, strafing and combos.
Why PvP players still use 1.8.9
In 1.9 Mojang added the attack cooldown: a weapon hits hardest only after a short wait, so spamming clicks stopped working. In 1.8.9 there is no cooldown: every click is a full hit, and fights are about aim, movement and how fast you can click. It is also lighter on old PCs and has no shields or offhand to slow fights down.
Settings that help
- FPS: as high and as steady as possible. 1.8.9 is light, but a performance client helps; see how to get more FPS in Minecraft.
- FOV: 90 to 100 is common; higher shows more but makes targets smaller.
- Sensitivity: low enough to track a strafing player smoothly. Many players use 400–800 DPI on the mouse with in-game sensitivity around 70–100%.
- Toggle sprint: so you never forget to sprint.
- Clean view: low fire, fewer particles and a texture pack with short swords (many "PvP packs" exist) make it easier to see your opponent.
The techniques that win fights
W-tapping (sprint reset)
When you hit while sprinting, your opponent takes extra knockback, but the hit ends your sprint. Releasing and pressing W again (or tapping S) right after each hit restarts the sprint, so every hit pushes them back further. This is the core of combos.
Strafing
Move sideways with A and D while keeping your crosshair on the opponent. A target moving in circles is harder to hit, and strafing in the same direction as their aim breaks it.
Combos
A combo is landing several hits in a row while the other player cannot hit back. Good knockback (W-tap), steady aim and the right distance keep them flying away from you. The longer your combo, the less damage you take.
Block-hitting
In 1.8.9 you can block with your sword (right click). Tapping block between hits reduces the damage you take while keeping pressure. It takes practice: block too long and you slow down.
The fishing rod
Hitting someone with a rod gives a small knockback that resets their combo on you or starts yours. It is a staple of Duels and UHC.
Clicking: CPS
CPS (clicks per second) matters, but aim matters more. Most good players click 8 to 14 CPS. Techniques like jitter clicking or butterfly clicking reach more, but check the rules of your server: many limit CPS, and auto-clickers and macros are cheating and get you banned.
Mods that help (and are allowed)
PvP clients add mods that show information, never mods that play for you. Hexa Client has, for 1.8.9:
- Keystrokes and CPS: see your keys and clicks on screen.
- PvP info: your current combo, the reach of your last hit and hits given and taken.
- 1.7 animations: the block-hit and item animations of 1.7 that many PvP players prefer.
- No hit delay: removes the half-second pause after a missed swing.
- Hit sounds, toggle sprint, zoom and session stats (kills, deaths, K/D, streak).
None of these click or aim for you; servers can switch any of them off with server rules.
Where to practise
- Hypixel (
mc.hypixel.net): Duels, Bedwars and Skywars, with players of every level. - Practice servers: dedicated PvP servers with ranked queues and kits.
- A friend: 1v1 in a flat world to practise W-taps and combos. See how to play Minecraft with friends.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 1.8.9 better for PvP?
It has no attack cooldown, so every click is a full hit. Fights depend on aim, movement and clicking speed, which many players find more skillful and fun.
What is a good CPS for PvP?
8 to 14 CPS is enough for most players. Aim, W-tapping and movement win more fights than raw clicking speed.
Is using a PvP client allowed?
Yes, clients that show information (keystrokes, CPS, coordinates) are allowed on most servers. Auto-clickers, reach or aim assists are cheats and get you banned.
What is W-tapping?
Resetting your sprint right after each hit by releasing and pressing W again, so each hit gives full sprint knockback.
